Helping Families One Story at a Time

A legacy video of my 82-year-old father in 2019 changed my life forever. It was in that moment that I wondered why more families don’t do this until I realized how much others charge. So I developed my own way to make it affordable for more families without sacrificing quality.

Now...

What Makes Heirloom Different?

Made It Affordable

Most families don't invest in a family legacy video because it's too expensive. Professional video production companies charge anywhere from $6,500 to $15,000 to create a family legacy video. We wanted to make this affordable so more families could do this. We cut 80% of the costs and maintained the quality using our own proprietatry remote video production process that uses smartphones.

Pleasurable Experience

Having video cameras, lighting, and a crew of 2 or 3 people can be very intimidating for your parent. With our solution, we supply a custom Apple iPhone smartphone and our 100% remote video production services. The entire process is more relaxing and intimate for your parents because there is no video crew in their home.

Easy To Enjoy

Who has the time or ability to watch a 45-minute video on a DVD? Instead, we edit each answer into a 2 to 10-minute video clip. This way, you can pick and choose the story you want to watch. Best of all, we don't leave anything on the editing room floor. A 2-hour interview results in 20 to 25 separate videos.

Watch Safely Anytime, Anywhere

To make it easy for you to enjoy and share the videos with family and friends, we include 3-months of FREE secure online video hosting. Watch the videos from your computer, tablet, or smartphone anywhere you have access to the internet. We also provide (2) two USB thumb drives so you also have a physical copy of the videos.

No Travel Expenses

Professional video production companies are typically not located where your parents live. In addition to paying to create the video, you will have to pay for their airfare, hotels, meals, and any other travel-related expenses. Our process is 100% remote so there are no travel expenses. It also means we work anywhere in the US.

Client Testimonials

Here what our clients had to say about their legacy video experience working with Heirloom.

Why Have Heirloom Create Your Legacy Video?

There are 3 ways to create a legacy video. You can do it yourself, hire a video production company or use Heirloom.

Do It Yourself

You can certainly do it yourself using your smartphone. It will cost you nothing other than your time. The biggest challenge will be the interview because for many families, their parents live in another city or state. A neighbor of mine has been trying for 3 years. And let’s not forget you will need to learn how to conduct an interview, how to properly shoot video that looks and sounds good, and then you will have to learn how to edit video.

Hire a Video Company

By hiring a professional who know the video is going to look and sound great. The biggest issue here is it will cost you a minimum of $6,500. Not only will you have the cost of the video but they will also charge you for their travel expenses which could easily be another $2,000. And let’s not forget about Covid-19 and having strangers in your elderly parent’s home.

We Make It EASY!

Choose Heirloom

With Heirloom you get the best of both worlds. You get access to video professionals but because we use a 100% remote production approach, we are able to offer our services for a fraction of what our competitors charge. And we can ensure the safety of your parents because there is no one coming into their home. And because this is done virtually, we can interview them anywhere in the country.

Heirloom Family Documentaries

As a professional videographer, I have shot hundreds of videos, but none was as important as this one. For 4 hours, we interviewed my 82-year old dad on video, asking him questions about his childhood, his friends, his parents, growing up in NYC, going to college, meeting my mother, and so much more. I was in tears when he finished. I had never seen this side of my father before. He shared feelings and thoughts about his life that I never knew.

The experience changed my life and that of my two brothers. We discovered things about our dad and ourselves that we never knew. I found the true benefit of a legacy video is how it builds richer, more meaningful relationships with our loved ones now while they are still here.

David Vogel, owner of Heirloom Family Documentaries

My name is David Vogel, and for over 25 years, I worked in Hollywood and New York City on feature films, documentaries, music videos, and national TV commercials. After creating my father’s legacy video, I decided to help other families make their legacy videos, but cost was a major problem. Professional video production companies charge $5,000, if not more, to create a legacy video, and that didn’t even include travel expenses. I knew this was too much money for most families, so I set out on finding a way to make it more affordable.

In 2020, I developed a new way that replaces the in-person video crew with a virtual one. There are no travel expenses, making it available to families anywhere in the country. It also eliminates 80% of the cost. I love this work and the impact it is having on families. I hope you will allow us to interview your loved one. You will be glad you did.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the quality compare to a video created with an in-person video crew?

A professional, in-person video crew will be able to use professional cameras, lighting and audio so you will get the highest image and sound quality but you will pay 5 to 10 times more. Their pricing usually starts at $6,500 and can go up to $25,000.

The question is do you really need that level of quality? The optics and software built into today’s smartphones allow them to produce high quality HD if not 4K video without much effort. We use our custom Apple iPhone for our legacy videos and the quality rivals the quality we get from our professional video shoots. To maximize the image and sound quality, we also include a small tripod and wired microphone. Please take a look at examples of our videos above to see for yourself.

Is this safe during the current Covid-19 pandemic?

Our entire process is done 100% remotely so there is no human contact between your family member and our video professionals. For added safety, all our equipment is cleaned and sterilized between each use.

How long is the interview?

We offer 3 different packages. Our silver package includes a 2-hour interview, our gold package includes a 3-hour interview and our platinum package includes a 4-hour interview. For the gold and platinum packages, we can break up the interview into 2 sittings but need to be completed in one or two consecutive days.

What if I want a longer interview?

If you are interested in a longer interview, we can add additional hours to your package. Just let us know when ordering and we will let you know the additional cost.

Can we interview multiple family members?

If you would like us to interview both parents or grandparents, that is possible. We can interview them separately as well as together.

What are the life topics covered in an interview?

Each of us is different and have had different experiences in our lives. We can’t cover everything. So we offer a list with the variety of topics and you can select which ones you want us to cover. Most people take 10-15 minutes per topic so for a 2-hour interview, we cover 4-6 topics, for a 3-hour interview, we cover 8-12 topics, and for a 4-hour interview, we cover 13 to 17 topics. Below is a list of different topics we cover. You can also add your own.

Will my family member be able to do this on their own?

Since everything is done remotely, your family member will be required to setup the equipment for their interview.

The good news is even if these are not steps they are comfortable doing, there is usually a friend, relative, or neighbor who can help them with setting up the equipment.
